  1. When will I get my I-20?

    After we receive your completed application, it takes about 2-3 weeks to review the application and process an I-20.  We will send your I-20 and acceptance package to you via a courier service such as DHL or Fed Ex.

  2. Will I earn Yale credit for ELI courses?

    No, ELI courses do not carry Yale credit.

  3. Is a TOEFL score required as part of my application?

    Although Yale does not require a TOEFL score for admission, prospective students may be able to use scores to evaluate their English language ability, and we use the score to help in our placement process. If you have recently taken a TOEFL, IELTS or TOEIC exam, please tell us your score on your application.

  4. What is the minimum age limit?

    Students wishing to apply to the University Preparation program must currently be in their junior or senior year of high school. Sophomores (students who will be juniors in the fall) are not eligible to apply.

    Students who wish to apply to the Intensive English Program must currently be in college.

    Students who plan to apply to English for Business, English for Law or English for Postgraduates must have a solid background in the discipline. Undergraduates who apply should have completed their third year of undergraduate study in either business or law to qualify for admission.

  5. Where will I live?

    English Language Institute students live with American and other international students in one of Yale’s twelve residential colleges.

  6. Do I have to take a test?

    Yes, students in the 6-week Intensive English Language course proficiency will be assessed on the first Monday of the program. Students in the seminars will be assessed by their instructors.

  7. Will I get a Yale student ID card?

    Yes, all students get a Yale summer ID card.

  8. Can I use all of Yale’s facilities?

    Yes, students in the English Language Institute that have chosen to live on campus can use all of Yale’s facilities, like the libraries, the gym and the computer labs.
