Review the Application Process
The deadline for completing your application is Monday, May 28, 2012.
Apply early! Class sizes are limited, students are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and visa applications take time.
Here are the tasks you’ll need to complete in order to attend one of our programs.
Confirm Eligibility
A TOEFL test is not required, but you should be speaking English at an intermediate to advanced level. Students in the Intensive English program will be given an English placement test to determine your level of study. Students in other programs will be assessed on the first day as well.
If you are younger than 18 years of age, we also require two Letters of Recommendation from a current headmaster, principal, or guidance counselor, and your current school transcripts. Download the recommendation form (PDF)
Apply for the program
- Complete the online application form and the included housing application, if necessary.
- Pay the application fee ($50 USD, non-refundable) and the tuition deposit ($200 USD, refundable if a student is not admitted to his or her program of choice) with a major credit card.
- Submit the financial documents required for your visa application: an original bank statement or original letter from your or your family's bank or a scholarship letter verifying your financial support, and a copy of the identity page of your passport. (See Obtain your student visa for more details.)
- If you are under 18, submit school transcripts and two letters of recommendation from a headmaster, principal, or guidance counselor. (Download a PDF copy of our recommendation form.)

Obtain a Student Visa
If you are not a US citizen or a US permanent resident, you will need to obtain F-1 student status. We urge you to APPLY EARLY.
Here are the steps:
- Complete your application form and submit the required fees.
- Submit original proof of your ability to pay for your tuition, fees, and living expenses: a bank statement, an original letter from your or your family's bank, or a scholarship letter from the organization that will pay your expenses.
Request 2 copies, one for our offices and one for the embassy when you apply for a visa. - Submit a copy of the identity page of your passport (the page with your name and birthdate).
- Yale’s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) will then issue the I-20 form.
- Take the 1-20 form to your embassy and apply for your visa.
APPLY EARLY ENOUGH TO COMPLETE THIS NECESSARY STEP.
Please note:
As an international student, you will need to enroll in a full-time course of study and enter the U.S. on an F-1 student visa. If you do not have an F-1 visa, you will not be allowed to attend, without exception. You may not study on a B-1/B-2 visitor or tourist visa.
More information on visa policies can be found on line at yale.edu/oiss.
